Exposing and Debunking the Sunk Cost Fallacy
"I've gone too far to turn back."
"I've invested too much time, money and resources into this."
"I've built my identity around this."
"I've given too much of myself to walk away now."
But your life is not getting better.
That thing is almost killing you. It is draining you, destroying your focus, affecting your peace, your self-esteem, your health, your relationships, and perhaps even your ability to recognise yourself.
Yet you keep holding on because you have already invested so much.
👉 That is the sunk cost fallacy.
Sometimes, even people who are supposed to help us navigate difficult situations can inadvertently reinforce this mindset. Some counsellors, whether consciously or unconsciously, build their theories and counselling around enduring, fixing and staying when the wiser thing can actually be to recognise that something needs to be left behind.
There is a difference between encouraging someone to persevere through a difficult season and encouraging them to remain on a path that has become destructive simply because they have already invested so much in it.
I found this scripture on what God expects of us when we receive light and better understanding, and it helped me understand better how God thinks:
“Jeremiah, say to the people, ‘This is what the Lord says: “‘When people fall down, don’t they get up again? When they discover they’re on the wrong road, don’t they turn back? Then why do these people stay on their self-destructive path? Why do the people of Jerusalem refuse to turn back? They cling tightly to their lies and will not turn around.”
(Jeremiah 8:4–5)
🤔 Think about that.
When people discover that they are on the wrong road, don't they turn back?
Even if that is all you've ever known.
Even if people know you by that identity.
Even if you have invested years of your life, money, resources, relationships, energy and your very sense of self into it.
The moment you realise that it is not good for you, you have new information.
And that new information requires a new decision.
God expects us to respond to the light and truth we receive, rather than cling tightly to what we now know is destructive.
You cannot keep convincing yourself that if you just walk a little further, eventually you will reach a particular junction where the road will suddenly become different.
📌 Sometimes, the road is the problem.
Even praying over a destructive or dysfunctional situation will not necessarily change what it is, nor does prayer require God to validate a decision simply because you have invested so much into it.
God can redeem your time, but that redemption happens on the path of change, not while you remain in the same destructive path or environment.
📌 This is worthy of note: In life, a path that initially appeared good can eventually reveal itself to be destructive, and it could be by no fault of yours.
And when that happens, you don't have to die on that road just to prove that you were committed to it.
You don't have to remain in a relationship, environment, career, friendship, investment, ideology or situation simply because you have already given so much to it.
You don't have to keep sacrificing your peace, focus, self-esteem, health and life just because you have invested your time, money, effort, identity and reputation.
What you have already invested should not become the reason you keep losing.Turning back does not mean everything you invested was meaningless. It means you have recognised that continuing to invest may cost you even more.
You are not necessarily going back to start over. You are turning back with knowledge.
° You are saving what remains.
° You are choosing not to lose more simply because you have already lost so much.
When you receive light, act on it. When you realise you are on the wrong road or with the wrong person, turn back.
When something is destroying you, you don't have to keep walking until it kills you.
❗You can turn around.
❗You can save the remains.
❗You can rebuild.
And you can build back better and stronger with the knowledge you didn't have when you first started walking that road.
