CHANGE IS LIFE

In my childhood days, my parents will buy a fowl during Christmas and it will be used in preparing the "Christmas stew".

There was usually an order for the distribution:

The first born son gets the head of the chicken as his right. I and my immediate elder sister each got the limbs of the chicken. My immediate younger brother got one of the wings of the chicken sometimes or one of the limbs instead of my immediate elder sister. I cannot remember what my other two elder sisters got.

Then the lap, breast and other chunky parts of the chicken will be served to my parents.

For every Christmas that came and went, this tradition continued. My elder brother insisted on the head as a right and the house will not remain the same if a mistake is made in giving another person his right, which is the head of the chicken.

When we grew up, things started changing around the house. My elder brother stopped caring about the head of chicken because he soon realized that there was no meat there. One cannot pride himself to have eaten chicken by eating only the head of the chicken. So, even if the head would be given him, it had to be in addition to another meaty part of the chicken.

This change did not only happen for him. It happened for me, my younger brother and my immediate elder sister. We rebelled against the chicken limbs and wings because there was no meat there. What you get is an assignment to pull off the skin from the bony limbs and wings. We insisted that we cannot keep having chicken limbs where there were other interesting parts of the chicken inside the stew.

That was when the change happened!

Since we had grown up and wise, we can partake of the chunky parts of the chicken with my parents.

Presently, the chicken head and limbs are not considered parts of the chicken to be shared to the family members. Rather, anyone can eat it by choice as an addition but not the main meat.

Growth brings about wisdom and wisdom brings about change.

If there is nothing wrong with growth, then there should be nothing wrong with change.

When people become aware of what they could have, it should be considered. If the demands are appropriate, they should be met.

There is enough 'chicken' to go round!

  1. Wow! Love this piece!
Speaks about what happens in my home too. The chicken part says it all.
And change is inevitable, we should acknowledge its coming and embrace it when it happens.
    Thank you Chidera,
